Blistering is an asphalt shingle roofing problem that is often mistaken for hail damage and is one of the most common issues residential roofing contractors are called to fix especially during the summer. Blisters or blister rash can be identified by inconsistent bubbles rising up from inside the shingle. Typically asphalt shingles only blister where the exposure conditions on the roof include one or more of the following. A roof that is experiencing many small bubbles is said to have shingle rash like skin blisters these are also filled with either water or gas that originates from one of two places.

Blisters are typically small steep sided craters measuring a quarter inch 6mm or less in diameter with no granules visible in the crater. Blistering only occurs in asphalt roof shingles as it is a byproduct of manufacturing or installation. The shingles are composed of different layers of material.

Moisture in the shingle material occasionally moisture can become trapped within the layers of asphalt shingles as they are being manufactured. The cluster of blisters that form with shingles fill with fluid pop then start to ooze. While on some roofs blistered shingles may last at least as long as the shingle warranty period in other cases especially if the blistered roof is exposed to mechanical damage being walked on for example or other challenging exposure conditions the blisters may play a role in roof wear and roof life as we elaborate below. Since each course consists of two layers of shingles blisters will not evolve into leaks but they may cause premature deterioration of the appearance of the roof if they re large and widespread.
